Crestview Doors Launches Door-O-Vision

Date December 1, 2008

One of my favorite houseblogs was from the Erwin couple down in Texas. I loved reading it…and when they completed their house, they launched a business making midcentury modern doors. Yes, building a house and blogging can lead you to discover untapped niches in business! They’ve just launched a new tool to help customers “picture” the door on their own home! Take a look…

Crestview Doors introduces the Amazing Door-o-Vision, a widget that allows users to upload a photo of their home and see what it would look like with a classic mid-century door. Door-o-Vision uses the latest in web technology to facilitate a custom look for any home. Door-o-Vision features more than 30 designs, 14 finishes and represents multiple shapes and sizes including double door units.

As part of their Save Your Neighborhood Campaign, Crestview Doors hopes that this new technology will help continue to increase awareness of and appreciation for mid-century design. Mid-century modern (MCM) is an architectural, interior and product design style that generally describes post-war developments from roughly 1945 to 1965. This style is characterized by geometric design, absence of decoration, and an embrace of modern building materials and technology.

Crestview Doors designs and retails doors inspired by the more than 20 million homes built during the American mid-century. Launched in 2007 after owners David and Christiane Erwin failed to find a period-appropriate door for their own 1951 remodel, Crestview Doors ships custom hand-crafted doors and millwork across the United States and Canada.

Our House may be Killing Our Cat

Date November 28, 2008

Our cat has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Not a surprise, as this particular cat has been constantly sick from birth. However, our vet told us it is widely believed hyperthyroidism in cats is caused by flame retardants in the home. The good news for our cat, Granola, is that she can undergo an expensive treatment of radioactive iodine and be completely cured. YAY (poor checkbook). The bad news is there are obviously a high level of flame retardants in our home and researchers don’t know if/what the effects might be on humans. Suddenly I have a leery eye on my carpet, sofas, and mattress. We do have wood floors in 1/2 the house, but of course I’m looking at our wool carpet and wanting to rip it out right now (I hate it anyway–I would NEVER buy wool carpet after my experience with this carpet). I don’t have the money to do it, because then I’d need money to put in a new wood floor, but if I did this carpet would disappear!

Check out Eric’s Website

You’ve got to check out Eric’s new website, because I designed it! (And that’s the reason it’s so simple because my design/coding skills need some improvement!)

The coolest retro 1950’s kitchen sinks!

Date November 16, 2008

When we remodeled our kitchen we never did get a new faucet.  We just kept the one that came with the house.  We’ve been looking for a faucet for three years…and they’re always too expensive or too contemporary or brushed nickel or something else that just doesn’t work with with our remodel.  HOWEVER, we now know what we want.  Pam, over at retro renovation, alerted us that she is now selling dishmaster faucets–and they are soooo cool!  I personally really like this one:

And, it’s not out of my price range (well, in the near future, not today) at $169.99.  You’ll have to check out the other faucets on her new website, dishmasterliving.com.

Now if only I could find a new bedroom set.

HOME magazine and Eric’s Glass

Date October 13, 2008

Home magazine

I haven’t updated in awhile, but since the October edition of HOME magazine is out, I thought I’d better.

Two weeks ago we found out that HOME magazine went belly-up. This made sense, since we hadn’t seen the October edition on the shelves (we’re in the October addition). However, just last week people started calling Gazelle Glass asking for the salt and pepper shakers featured in the article (note: those salt and pepper shakers were prototypes and aren’t sold by Gazelle, although lots of other salt and pepper shakers are). So, we started looking for the magazine again, but didn’t find it. Just two days ago we found out that the folks subscribing to HOME magazine got their copies. And, today Eric’s sister, who lives near Kansas City, called to say the magazine is in her grocery store! It’s still not here in Corvallis, but we are anxiously waiting!

Also, because there have been a few calls to Gazelle, I thought I’d update everyone on Eric’s new business, “e.b. glassworks”. He’s now in 11 galleries. Stop by and check out his work if you live near one of them:

HOME Magazine and ModWalls

Date August 2, 2008

I haven’t made an update in awhile, but we have had a lot of activity here! Just two weeks ago a photographer came to our house to take photos for HOME magazine. Pictures of our kitchen will appear in the October issue. The photoshoot took about 5 hours and was done by David Bayles, an awesome photographer! Here is a photo of David preparing to set up for a photo of the kitchen through the kitchen doorway.

And in other news, you may remember we used a strip of modwalls glass tiles in our kitchen renvoation. We are very happy with the finished look and get a lot of comments. Since we first discovered modwalls, about three years ago, they’ve grown by leaps and bounds and now carry all kinds of unique tiles. Recently we discovered the RAW series at Modwalls and fell in love!! So, our plan is to redo the fireplace surround using these tiles…and we can choose the color combination. Now we have a lot of a choices! I think my favorite style is the Vid. Aren’t they cool??

uh oh, more reasons to spend money at Rejuvenation

Date July 16, 2008

Well, as if I didn’t love the store enough, Rejuvenation has just unveiled some amazing reproduction fixtures for 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s style interiors.  I think I know what we’ll be using in our next bathroom remodel (which is years away since we’re so poor from the first one!)  I LOVE the green porcelain!

Our Yard Wins Award!

Date July 12, 2008

Much to our surprise we’ve received recognition from the city and Civic Beautification Urban Forestry Commission for the landscaping we’ve done to the front yard! Here’s the sign that will be in our yard through the summer:

Eric loves to garden, but other than that we have no landscaping experience. We did own a house before and we learned while landscaping that yard that we needed to generally plant 2-3 of everything (we did a lot of “onesies” and decided everything looked too chaotic and unnatural). Our guiding theme when doing the landscaping has been “1950’s woodland ranch”. Whenever we add something to the yard we ask ourselves, “Does this go with our 1950’s woodland ranch theme?” I know it sounds a little silly, but it does help to always have this thought in mind when picking new plants. Here are some more pictures of the yard!

If you’d like to see what the yard used to look like, here are some BEFORE photos:

What we’re up to…

Date June 6, 2008

So, we haven’t posted in awhile because we’ve done NOTHING to the house. In fact, it’s getting quite messy in here and I’m wishing we had a maid. All our energy has been focused on getting Eric’s Etsy shop up and running. It’s amazing how much time and money it takes to get these things up. For example, we’ve had to purchase a special photo cube for taking pictures of Eric’s art; Eric made all the pieces he wants to sell in his shop which took awhile because he wanted the colors and designs to be just right; we’ve been busy writing up the descriptions and shop policies; we had to purchase boxes and bubble wrap for shipping; we had business cards made (by myminicards); we had to setup a paypal account; we’re working on a banner for the shop; and the list goes on! Stay tuned.
